I had a look into this.  We are using the output of `date -R' for
generating part of a script which builds a Debian GNU/Linux package only.
Thus the configure script now just ignores the error message running 
`date -R 2>/dev/null'.

Thanks for the report.  It'll be fixed in the next release.
