This, as Richard knew, was a little extreme. Hes a nice creature, though not interesting to paint. Jonathan answered: It doesnt much matter, perhaps. His face,clean-shaven, heavy, emaciated, was bent a little downward towards hisaudience. The two dead girls went togetherslowly out of the Park. I admit you imply awhole lot of what I only hope are correct comments on the rest of it. The first shadow of another night was in the sky. Richard began to speak, and checked himself. Richard suddenly found himself believing inthe painting. He said slowly: Youve alwaysbeen good at light. Richard obediently renewed his study and his reverie. Lester disliked beingheld; she disliked Evelyn holding her; now she disliked it more thanever. It appears to be a fact, said Lady Wallingford. Then theres theRussian one and the Chinese. You say youve heard him preach; what does hepreach? There wasa silence, concentrated on the painting. I generally manage to make something more or less definite. Evelynshand might have been the hand of some pleading lover whose touch madeher flesh creep. Thecolours were so heightened that they were almost at odds. I mean, Ill paint something different somehow. They had done thistogether on a number of occasions before a new painting. Lady Wallingford said: We wont keep you, Mr. Now to paint the massiveness oflight-What do you call this? It was the Air Marshal whoasked me to dine one night after Id painted him. And Father Simons face is exactly the same shape. He could manage his words but not his tone. Love, said Jonathan, more gloomily than ever as he looked at hiswatch.
