They don't look ridiculous to me. Faced with many index entries which
begin identically, it would help me a lot to know what aspect of the
macro is described where each index entry leads me.
For example, when I type in Info "i \&", and then hit TAB, it would
help to see the list of completions like this:
\&, definition of
\&, use to escape control characters
\&, and foobar
etc. This immediately tells me which one of these entries I might
wish to read, and which ones I'm not insterested in.
(Of course, it's possible that the specific example of "definition of"
is something you don't like, but I didn't mean this specific wording,
just the principle.)
