It sounds like this is some huge misunderstanding on my part: you were
talking all the time about texi2html, while I was talking about
"makeinfo --html".  Makeinfo is part of the Texinfo package, while
texi2html is not.  I don't use texi2html myself, so I wouldn't know
what should it produce from your sources.

Perhaps you should try makeinfo, it could do what you want.

Yes, it does.  But again, I was talking about makeinfo, not
texi2html.  Sorry for the confusion.

Is it possible that you are reading the Texinfo docs under the
assumption that it describes texi2html?  If so, that assumption is
false: texi2html is not part of Texinfo, and the manual describes how
"makeinfo --html" works, not how texi2html works.
