\kern1sp is actually a breakpoint :).

Anyway, I suspect the problem is not a breakpoint after the index
command (it already goes to some pains to avoid that), but a breakpoint
before the @deffn, where one wants extra whitespace.

Anyway, I'll look at it.  I agree it should be fixed or documented.
