There were some texinfo.tex patches a few years back to translate
non-ASCII input into the correct TeX representation in different
contexts. Then it didn't matter what font you were using. I've been
using the patch here successfully, because we write a lot of non-English
text with Texinfo, and our authors don't want to type markup for
accented characters. The patches were really ugly, but it would be nice
to somehow get this functionality into the distribution.
