    I have not tested this patch with an "old" TeX, and I suspect it might
    leave some --help.dvi or --help.aux etc. file around.  

It would have to be *really* old.  I implemented --help for tex a long
time ago (10+ years), in fact it was the main reason I gave tex long
options in the first place.  So I won't worry about it until someone
complains.
