Is there any quick hack with, like say, "recode -d ..tex" that will convert
accents to the tex form (eg: \'a), and work?
People have mentioned using recode before as a workaround to having i18n
"really" work, but I don't know any details. I am no expert on recode myself.
Any chance of making it work smoothly, out-of-the-box?
There's always a chance :). It's been on my list for years, unfortunately.
There have been some recent discussions about it, but I can't predict
when I'll have time to implement anything :(. It basically means reworking
the entire font mechanism in texinfo.tex -- which would be a good thing,
all in all, but is not an especially easy thing to do.
It is definitely the most important feature to implement, in my mind ...
