Karl has mentioned that he has some tests for makeinfo in
texinfo/makeinfo/tests ; this test suite is driven by automake,
see Makefile.am in that directory.
The documentation for this is in
info '(automake)Tests'
(I use automake 1.7d, a beta for 1.8; current beta is 1.7f.)
I beleive many GNU packages have test suites. I cannot tell which
of them are best up-to-date examples of how should automake test
suites be done.

If you really find time to make a good testing infrastructure for
texinfo, it would be very nice and very useful.
