I think supporting that would mean more ugliness in the reader loop
routine, which is ugly already.

Currently, bare braces are allowed only in the @def* directives, which
is one heck of a reason why those directives have so many
idiosyncrasies.  I'd advise against introducing similar problems in
more places.
