I wanted to do it in shell, but I also wanted some structures to do different
things for different formats.
I think it is not an issue in development environments as automake
allready needs perl, however it might be argued that the test script
could be used out of a development environment.

Indeed. As we will generate manuals for various formats the main directory
will soon be filled with results (whenever the result files are kept, that
is in case of failure).
