Yes, because echo is in the dir file.  I infer that you did not put
ec/ecc in the dir file.  If you do put ec in the dir file, I think info
will find it first.  (See the Texinfo documentation regarding
@dircategory and the install-info program if you're not familiar with
all this.)

I'm not sure if an exact match on a filename should be preferred to a
substring match on a dir entry.  I can imagine people renaming an info
file behind a dir for whatever reason, then being surprised when it was
found anyway, despite a (partially) matching dir entry.  Hmm, I'm not
convincing myself.


BTW, 4.4 is old (although I don't think the behavior has changed in this
particular respect).  4.6 was released last year, and we're pretesting
for 4.7 now.  If you feel like trying out the current code, it's at
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/texinfo.
