Maybe adding something like @euro{} for the euro currency unit,

Yes, it would be a very good thing but it's not trivial, because it's
not in the standard Computer Modern fonts. Loading one of the fonts
that has it has been on my list for a while.
I'm also not too sure what to do for the other output formats. Are
there entities defined? Can you advise?
BTW, your example character (which I assume was a Euro sign in your
life) came out as an a-circumflex, \202, logical-not in my Emacs :).
