   "C-u M-x compare-windows RET" should do what you want in that case.

Good point; I had forgot about the prefix arg.  I have
`delete-trailing-whitespace' bound to a key and use it all the time.
(I also have `compare-windows' bound to a key so I can compare two
versions of a document; for some reason, I use diff less frequently.)
