Yes, it works. I think perhaps a yet less intrusive alternative it would
be to link makedoc against libiberty (which provides x-functions) for the
build system, but that would restrict cross-compilation to systems using
the GNU toolchain for native builds. It wouldn't be an unreasonable
restriction IMO, but I don't use any other tools and you may have a
different view.

I have assignments for a few GNU software packages already in place (GCC,
binutils, etc.), so I see no problem with yet another one. It's been a
few years since, though, so you'd probably want to send me the form again
in case it's been updated meanwhile.
