I would like to argue (again :) against this opinion.  This
implementation would also enable documents with depth-specified
splitting.  For some of my documents, --split actually over splits,
and I have to resort using --no-split so that we have enough contents.

In this case, "missing files" would just be links to their "up",
recursively, up to the deepest really output file.  Anchors do the
rest.
