Sorry, I have nothing to add to Stepan's excellent summary (most of
which I had forgotten).  The right way to do cross-compiling has always
been a mystery to me.  The Autoconf manual has some words to say on the
subject (See the Specifying Names node, for example;
http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/manual/autoconf-2.57/html_node/autoconf_126.html),
but it doesn't translate into a recipe for me.

So ... thanks for doing all that work, but I don't see how I can
integrate the patch as it stands.  Hopefully being in the archives will
help some future cross-compiling person.
