@end titlepage permits just 1 blank

I just started using texinfo and started with the "short example" on p.12 of 
the documentation.

Although texi2dvi worked well makeinfo always stated "@end titlepage expected".

So i fetched the latest version (4.7).
The problem still continued (i have the @end titlepage command in short.txi!),
so i started playing around and strange:

@end titlepage only works with exactly one blank between end and titlepage
not with <tab> nor with 2 or 3 blanks

Is this behavior intentional?
Can't imagine to be the first who noticed ...
