What does it mean ``some patterns are likely not to match''?

Not all those files will exist. Although I'm not sure why that's a
problem, it never has been before. Good question.

Anyway, I'm worried that using `ls' could fail, if, for example, `ls'
    is aliased to "ls -F".

There is an assumption in just about every shell script, texi2dvi
certainly included, that standard Unix commands haven't been tinkered
with substantially -- that would make them impossible to write.
Fortunately (and not coincidentally), personal profiles like .bashrc are
not read when executing scripts, so aliases are not in effect. (I'm
sure you know this.)

As for replacing >/dev/null with >&6, is that portable enough to
    various flavors of Bourne shell?

Such redirections have been present in texi2dvi for quite a long time,
so I think we're ok there.

Thanks,
k
