Here's my observations of GnuWin32's ls port (from
fileutils-4.1-8), run from Windows XP's CMD.EXE:

For each [FILE] argument, a failed pattern match
prints a message to stderr ("Invalid argument" or "No
such file or directory"), while a successful match
prints results to stdout.
