I don't remember this, and thought I'd try to go back and see when/why
it changed.  (Presumably to fix some other bug.)

    With other words, this:
      @deffn foo xxx
      @cindex baz
      @deffnx bar yyy
      foobar
      @end deffn
    should produce good HTML output.

Yes.  Hopefully it'll be doable one way or another.
