Thanks for reporting this.  I've always had info in my path (pointing to
the development ginfo :), so I never stumbled across the bug.  I'll try
to fix it up, one way or another.

    (What about cross-compilations?  ../info/ginfo might not be executable

True enough, but I'm not going to worry about it.  If anyone ever tries
to cross-compile Texinfo from CVS, they can just touch the man pages.
