Greetings,
(1) If there is some way to have TeX return an error only for overfull
boxes and not for underfull boxes, you should use it in the Makefile.
Are you sure that there isn't something else causing the error? In my
experience, TeX does not exit with a nonzero status code for either
underfull or overfull boxes.
Overfull boxes produce an ugly blot at the right hand side of the page,
BTW, if it's not possible or desirable to fix the \overfullrule's,
@finalout will avoid printing them in the output.
I am about to submit a patche for the overfull boxes to the libtool
group.
So much the better.
(2) The commands @letterpaper, @afourpaper, @<etc> should produce a
command of the form:
\special{papersize=11in,8.5in}
Looks like that is actually written up in the Dvips manual, not Kpathsea
(I didn't think I remembered writing it there :). Whatever.
Are you actually specifying @afourpaper in the document or texinfo.cnf?
If you're actually using @afourpaper, and dvips is configured to use A4
by default, and the output looks wrong, then that certainly seems
problematic ... anyway, I'm asking a few other TeX folks about the issue.
Thanks for writing,
Karl
