if this is not clear from Karl's answer: the \thissection, as defined
in texinfo.tex can be used anywhere, _but not in headlines or footlines_.
Getting the current section name into headline or footline correctly
is difficult. And if you redefine it for each section, you can be
surprised sometimes. It's only safe to redefine it after a forced page
break. To loosen this limitation, \mark's have to be used, and it can
take some time to get it right.
I cannot add this task to may plans either, sorry.
