BTW, a footer string as defined with @xxxfooting jumps up and down
within the output -- this is *really* ugly, and I consider it as a
severe typographical bug (I use texinfo 4.8).
I cannot reproduce this with the current texinfo.tex
(ftp://tug.org/tex/texinfo.tex). I added your lines:
@headings off
@evenheading @| @| @thischapter
@oddheading @thissection @| @|
@evenfooting @thispage @| @| @thistitle
@oddfooting @thistitle @| @| @thispage
to groff.texinfo after the @end titlepage and ran make pdf, as you
suggested, but the new footer seemed steady to me.
It seems a bit strange to me, since I don't recall making any changes
about this since 4.8. But I didn't really check.
If you see the problem (or any others) with the current texinfo.tex,
please send details (like which page is wrong).
