That is already the case for Automake-generated makefiles, but only
per-directory.
Sorry for being dense, but I don't understand what you mean ... it seems
to me that this is something that either automake should do, or
shouldn't be worried about?
Alternatively, if you/automake think (and ideally document :) that this
"SUBDIRS = . tests" is the best way to handle programs that have a
tests/ subdir, then I suppose I have no real objection to adding it. I
just don't want to be the only special case out there ...
