I think that it could also easily replace all the xml based formats
with very little work. For info output it would certainly require 
more work, since there are some specificities (like arranging
paragraphs, and doing the ref tables).

Adding a tex or latex backend would certainly be also very easy. I had a
LaTeX backend in project for a long time and I made all the @-commands
available in the backends for that, but I never took the time to
implement it, and in fact I am not good enough in LaTeX to really do 
it.

Sorry, I mistaken with another thing, which is curently unsupported in
makeinfo/texi2dvi, like

@table @emph
@item line
text

}
