Not to worry.  It's not an unreasonable suggestion.  Just one I don't
want to take :).

    I was just thinking that given a large collection of changes is
    about to hit trunk, it might be nice to sort out the legacy naming
    issues.

Both existing command names (makeinfo, texi2html) will continue to work
forever, as far as I'm concerned.  Despite their suboptimal nature, I
don't see anything to be gained by adding more.  Definitely not
output-specific ones.

    Most of the questions I'm asking at the moment immediately apply to
    me and my GNU Automake build system, which uses makeinfo for the
    documentation. When would it be likely that Automake be updated to
    use the new programs?

Automake will use the new implementation of makeinfo automatically, once
it is released and installed on a given system :).  It won't be
immediate, as Patrice said.

I don't exactly understand why it matters now for your use of Automake.
Are you talking about make dist?  Or something else?
