    We can also implement a variable in ~/.info which will control the

I don't see a reason to add a variable.

The only interesting change would be for it to automatically fall back
to searching as a string instead of giving an error message.  E.g.,
RE_CONTEXT_INDEP_ANCHORS|RE_CONTEXT_INDEP_OPS.  Except those don't
mention (...).  Hmm.  Emacs search does treat an open-group operator as
normal when there is no close-group, so it must be there somewhere.

Oh well.  Not worth your time to go further IMHO.
