Neither do I.  I only presented it as a possible (albeit not the best)
alternative.

I'm all for it.  To tell you the truth, I've already implemented the
solution I was referring to (i.e. hacking the Makefile.in.in), but I'd
happily stash it away until it is needed (or not). Simply renaming the
.init files as you propose is much simpler.
