I would surmise that HTML -> epub might work better, perhaps via pandoc
(http://johnmacfarlane.net/pandoc/).  I've never actually tried it.

Partly because makeinfo --docbook is not exactly bulletproof, as you've
seen.

    $ makeinfo --docbook test.texi
    test.texi:8: warning: @image file `gnutls-x509.txt' unreadable: No such
