    I think you missed one point ... thumbpdf didn't have real problems,

I was simply reacting to the error messages you reported, since I didn't
have anything else to go on.

    I also have the feeling that it comes from the fact that texi2pdf
    is run two times, and the second time some cmd line options are 
    not properly passed, or something is not properly called ...

Sorry to say that I'm still not clear on what bug you are reporting,
what you expect to happen, or how it's related to Texinfo.  So I have no
idea either.  Let me know if you figure out what to do :).

I can only suggest the obvious: trying running the TL'09 and TL'11
versions in parallel with -x to look for the relevant differences.  Or
maybe the relevant differences are in thumbpdf.sty, or pdftexconfig.tex,
or ... who knows ...
