Without looking too deeply into the issues, my feeling is we should avoid

The next release is mostly getting bugfixes and being checked against
the manual, but I'd like to get this designed even if not implemented.

What do you see as the role of DocBook in the texinfo project?
Is it just another output format you'd like to support, or do
you see it as "strategic"?

I think it may make sense to position DocBook as I use it: For those
who want finer-grained control or processing. You use the default
texi2any to generate pdf or html [*] and get readable but plain output;
if you want fancier or customized output, go via DocBook.

[*] I won't speak of the info file format, which is a lost cause.
