Hi Per,

What do you see as the role of DocBook in the texinfo project?
Is it just another output format you'd like to support, or do
    you see it as "strategic"?

Certainly not strategic. Of course we want it to be good as it can be,
in principle, but neither Patrice nor I (especially I :) are anything
like Docbook experts. (I've received much conflicting advice about what
to do with it over the years, which probably accounts for some of
whatever strangenesses there are.)

if you want fancier or customized output, go via DocBook.

For people (like you, I guess) who know how to hack docbook, that is
fine. Whatever works.

For HTML output, the new makeinfo release should be able to customize
virtually anything anyone would want to. In fact, that is one of the
principal reasons we went this route, to have texi2html-level
customizations in the original texinfo.

In the future, we will have a latex backend, which should make it
possible for non-docbookers to play with PDF/DVI output as desired.

Best,
k
