Hi Karl,

Ah, the thing /does/ contain translatable strings. I hadn't noticed
that, being in the habit of searching for _(.

By the way, why is texindex.awk in SVN when it is a generated file?

Possibly. All I could find in gettext's Changelog was this (for 0.18.2):

2011-07-29 Bruno Haible <address@hidden>

Fix xgettext crash when extracting a message with plural that is
excluded.

But that doesn't sound like it.

By the way, many packages, when I've changed a .po file, only require
running 'make' in the main directory in order to regenerate (msgfmt)
the corresponding .gmo file. They don't require regenerating the .pot
file. True, very few users would change PO files from whatever is
being distributed, so it's probably not worth the effort to make a
special target for it, but it does look a lot more logical.
