  gawk -f ./jrtangle ./ti.twjr || rm -f texindex.awk

One question that comes to mind is why jrtangle is being run at all.
Did you intentionally remove texindex.awk or modify ti.twjr?  That is
texindex.awk's only dependency.  Neither file has changed since January.
Just wondering.

In any event, it looks like a missing } in jrtangle.
I'll talk to Arnold about it.
