would be useful for install-info to be able to do some transformation,
along with a transformation of the filename. (Karl, please explain why
you think this is a bad idea.)

Having I-I being able to transform dir file entries I have no particular
objection to. I suppose that is the way differently-named entries could
get into the dir file. It would just be a convenience over using
--name. It seems to me like it would be a pretty simple post-install
script at the Debian level to add version numbers to the dir entries
with the existing I-I, but what do I know.

What I see as trouble is having I-I install the info files, instead of
just dir entries. That would be a huge new can of worms. (Admittedly
the program was poorly named, but oh well.)

If you don't care about being able to access renamed files via
    cross-references,

Indeed, I was assuming that all cross-manual cross-references would go
to generic names, like "emacs", not "emacs24.5". In that case, I see no
need to rename files. Installing the info files in a subdir, plus
symlinks for the generic name, plus versioned entries in the main dir
file for easy user access, seems like enough to me. But I already said
that and apparently there's no agreement, so whatever ...
