There is also the fact that Texinfo is using all these file extensions
leaving less for other programs to use.

Consistency with LaTeX is a good argument, although I'm not very
familiar with LaTeX and how it handles index files.

I'm not personally convinced, and I would guess that not changing it
would be the better option. Moreover, it's not a priority for me to
work on right now.
