I really don't understand the code in \pdfgettoks in texinfo.tex. Does
anyone know what it's doing? It looks like it is taking the page
number apart digit by digit and then putting it together again? Why
does it need to do that? I think this code has been there for a long
time, so maybe no-one is around who remembers.
