xterm (or KDE's konsole in my case) offers a menu action "Copy", but first
the user has to mark a region on the screen - which is precisely what I can't
do in the usual way.

Perfect. Yes, this works already in info 6.0 (the version I'm using),
although it was not documented in that version. Glad to see that it
has been documented now! [1]
