But actually, they aren't supported on any OS.  That's why we changed
texi2any to emit Unix-style LF-only EOLs a while back, remember?

As for the rest: I don't really understand the motivation for the
change you describe, nor have a clear understanding of its effects.
You've obviously invested a lot of thought and work in this, and the
list of the reasons you posted is just the tip of that iceberg.  So I
will trust your judgment on that, and assume that if this causes
trouble, users (perhaps even myself ;-) will come back complaining
soon enough.
