Yes, I was thinking that there would have to be some change to texi2any.

That would be really awesome!  If you should implement this, please ping me for testing; I'd love to try it out.

Not sure if it matters, but perhaps allowing a distinction between deffn, defvar, and anchor would be useful so each manual can distinguish between them and perhaps do something different.  Anchors are interesting because it's a hint that the author thought it important enough to add an anchor for an item.

(Wish I had more time to hack on this.)
