Hello,

I have no clue about what could be going on.  One thing you could
attempt, to determine if there is the same issue with the pure perl
implementation, would be to do

export TEXINFO_XS=omit
makeinfo -I ./è simplest.texi

And report if there is the same issue.

Not sure if this is gonne be relevant, but also maybe you could tell
what your file system is.
