Wikipedia has an article about kerning, but not with a good example
of how ugly and disturbing the lack of kerning can be. I suggest
that you look at


where the issue can be seen on $C_{eff}$. Here, my mind doesn't
parse "eff" as a unique word, but as separate letters.
