A thing to note that linux is case sensitive.  cafty and Crafty could be two different programs depending on your environment.  It does sound like it "connected" to something that wasnt working right.

Strange. When I use XBoard 4.9.1 on Ubuntu 18.10, and start it with a
non-existing engine, I get an Error popup:

Failed to start first chess program *** on localhost: ***: No such file or
directory
