Your fix works fine. Thanks a lot! I implemented it as follows:

properties.put ("gnu.cpu.endian",
(isWordsBigEndian ())? "big" : "little");
properties.put ("gnu.java.io.encoding_scheme_alias.ISO-8859-1", "8859_1");
}
