cons -t and linked directories

I'm using Cons on Win32, and using Greg Spencer's Win32 extensions. I'm also
building files in linked subdirectories (so that the object files are in
build/{debug, release}/whatever).  The problem I'm running into is that cons
-t *always* says that there's nothing to build whenever I build from the
source directory (instead of the build directory).  Is there a way to get
cons to do the 'right thing'?
