you are touching a thing that has bothered me as well.

a. is it possible to have the complete mailarchive available for download
   as a single text file, well ok, one per year, say? Who would know
   how to implement this within the gnu.org mailling list server ?

b. as a workaround, I can send you a single file starting May 1999, as
   compressed textfile (2 MB or so). Let me know.
