Such as?

Parallel builds ("-j")
Directories can be dependencies (and even targets).
Can override environment variables per-command, so you don't have to make a temp env to change your CCFLAGS. This is huge.
Much better tool and platform support.
Can auto-parse config program output.
Built-in support for Qt and other systems.
TeX/LaTeX.
Better support for filenames with spaces.
Lots of other stuff I can't remember now.
