At least for now I'll upload my work to
https://github.com/tpievila/cplay. For now I have included the older
history up to 1.50pre7 and the Debian patch for tmp files. The
prereleases also included a fix to shell crashing, but I replaced the
whole fork with a call to subprocess.call. This means that Python <2.4
are no longer supported (Python releases have gone forward quite a lot
since 1.49!).

Other patches included in the Debian version 1.49-10 have been also
been deprecated by the prereleases.

Next on the todo list is mplayer.
